This details the process of creating a hybrid model from 3D scan data of a LEGO Yoda minifigure using Geomagic Design X. The model presents a unique challenge as it is composed of two distinct types of geometry: an organic-shaped head and a prismatic body.
To tackle this, a hybrid modeling approach
was adopted. The complex, organic head was processed using polygon fitting
techniques, while the rest of the body was created using feature modeling.
Data Optimization
The quality of a polygon fitting result is
highly dependent on the quality of the scan data's mesh. The
original scan data contained significant noise, so it was first refined using
the Polygon Optimization Tools within Geomagic Design X, such as 'Enhance
Shape' and 'Smart Brush'. This step improved the overall mesh
quality while preserving the distinctive features of the model.
The image below illustrates the improvement:
- Blue Model: The original, noisy scan data before processing.
- Yellow Model: The result after the mesh quality was improved.
This is organic shaped head and applied Auto surfacing on it.
Applied Feature modeling for body area.
